Lab-grown ruby tells (by growth method)
Not all synthetics look the same. Their growth method leaves distinct footprints.
- Flame-fusion (Verneuil): The most common and cheapest. Look for curved growth lines or curved color bands that sweep across the stone, round gas bubbles, and a very “glassy,” empty look. These stones are often extremely clean and bright red.
- Flux-grown: Grown from a molten flux. Look for wispy, reflective “flux veils,” angular flux residue that looks like metallic flakes, and fingerprint-like patterns with rounded pockets that glint when tilted. Silk is absent.

Color alone is unreliable. Both natural and lab-grown rubies can be vivid “pigeon’s blood” red. Synthetics are often tuned for ideal color.
Fluorescence can guide, but not decide. Many natural rubies from low-iron sources (like parts of Myanmar) glow bright red under long-wave UV due to chromium. Lab-grown rubies doped with chromium often glow just as strongly. Weak or quenched fluorescence can indicate higher iron (common in certain natural deposits) or specific synthetic recipes. Use it as a clue, not proof.
Beware of glass-filled “rubies”
A separate category is composite or glass-filled rubies. These are low-grade corundum heavily filled with lead-glass to boost clarity. They can look very clear in the face-up view but are fragile and low value.
- Blue flash effect: Tilt the stone and watch fractures flash electric blue—classic for lead-glass fills.
- Bubbles in cracks: Tiny gas bubbles line the fissures; natural fractures do not form perfect bubbles.
- Patchy clarity: Clear “windows” alongside hazy zones when viewed from the side.
If you see these, you are not dealing with a fine natural ruby or a clean lab-grown—it is a filled composite and should be priced accordingly.
Price, size, and paperwork: quick reality checks
- Price: Natural rubies with top color and minimal inclusions are rare and expensive. If a large, “flawless” ruby is cheap, assume synthetic or heavily treated.
- Size: Eye-clean natural rubies above 2 carats are uncommon. Above 5 carats, they are rare and usually certified.
- Paperwork: Significant natural rubies come with major-lab reports stating origin and treatments. For costly stones, insist on a report.
A quick at-home decision guide
- See oriented silk or natural fingerprints? Likely natural (possibly heated). Consider a lab report for confirmation.
- Stone is perfectly clear under 10×, with curved bands or bubbles? Synthetic (flame-fusion).
- Perfectly clear with metallic-looking flakes or glinty veils? Synthetic (flux-grown).

- Choose lighting wisely. Evaluate under neutral daylight-equivalent light; reds can look richer under warm bulbs.
